Shedeur Sanders wasn’t the answer for the quarterback-needy Browns in the NFL draft, and general manager Andrew Berry had a simple reason why.
The Browns picked five times over the first three rounds, eventually adding experienced Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel with pick No. 94.
Once projected as a No. 1 overall pick, Sanders' stunning slide has become the defining story of the draft. Berry gave some insight on why the Browns chose to pass on the Colorado star.
"Shedeur Sanders is an impressive young man and a really good QB. Sometimes fit comes into play," Berry said.
The Browns sent a large contingent to Colorado's pro day, worked out Shedeur Sanders privately, and even took Sanders and his Heisman-winning teammate, Travis Hunter, out to dinner ahead of the draft. Cleveland held the No. 2 pick and was widely expected to select Hunter, but instead traded out of the spot, moving back to No. 5 and securing a haul in a blockbuster deal.

Sanders has now watched five quarterbacks go off the board before him. Cam Ward (Titans), Jaxson Dart (Giants), Tyler Shough (Saints) and Jalen Milroe (Seahawks) have all found NFL homes.
Sanders had little to say during his historic slide, posting only a brief message on X during the third round: "Thank you GOD for EVERYTHING." He'll now wait to see if his name is called on Saturday, with Rounds 4-7 on tap.
