NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal believes LeBron James ending his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers would be "historical."
LeBron began his NBA career with the Cavaliers back in 2003. He played for the franchise from 2003-10 before going to the Miami Heat from 2010-14. The Akron native then returned to Cleveland from 2014-18 and helped delivered the team's first title in franchise history in 2016.
A future Hall of Famer, LeBron is currently a free agent for the first time since 2018. He's expected to sign with the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers or Minnesota Timberwolves.
Many people believe LeBron will sign with the Cavaliers. Cleveland assistant general manager Brandon Weems was with LeBron in Ohio a few weekends ago.
Weems is one of LeBron's closest friends.
"Let me talk to you about Brandon Weems," LeBron's agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, said on his podcast. "Brandon Weems is basically LeBron's brother. Now, he worked his own way [up], nobody gave him anything. He's earned to be in the front office of the Cavs. But that is a big feather in the cap [for Cleveland], because of Brandon Weems."
It would certainly be cool to see LeBron end his career in Cleveland. A starting lineup of James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, LeBron, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen could compete for the championship next season.
The Cavaliers made the conference finals last season, losing to the New York Knicks in four quick games. Adding LeBron could make Cleveland title favorites next season.
If Harden signs for $30 million and if Cleveland can deal Max Strus and take back no salary in return, the Cavaliers would be able to give LeBron the mid-level exception.
For the Los Angeles Lakers last season, LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game. He's still an elite offensive player despite being the oldest active player in the NBA.
It will be interesting to see where LeBron is playing next season. Paul recently said on his podcast that LeBron will not be "rushed" into making a decision.
"We're not going to be rushed," Paul said on the latest podcast episode of "Game Over" with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul, released Monday evening. "We're not going to be rushed. It's his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he'll make it. ... I saw Adam in New York and we discussed it. And like I said, it's still his choice. So if he doesn't really know, you can't rush it. You can't rush it."
