The Spruce Creek High School baseball team announced a memorial service for assistant coach Adam "Stump" Smith, that will take place at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach on May 18.
The service will be held at 6 p.m., and gates to "The Jack" will open at 5:30 p.m. The baseball team made the announcement in a post on X, which read "anyone is welcome to come and pay their respect."
Smith tragically passed away in a single-vehicle car crash on May 10. Friends, family, players and fellow coaches said he touched the lives of many high schools across Volusia County.
Before the first play of the Cure All-Star Baseball Game in Sanford on May 13, coaches, audience members, and athletes were asked to stand for a moment of silence and prayer to honor Smith. The announcement remembered him as a "dedicated leader" who "had a passion for coaching and was loved by all."
Three Spruce Creek players coached by Smith — Mason Sanders, Jordan Livingston and Joe Christen — took part in the game against the team from Lake County.
The News-Journal has reached out to Jim Jaworski, general manager for the Daytona Tortugas, who call Jackie Robinson Ballpark home, for comment.
