Arkansas running back Mike Washington Jr. has not been regarded as one of the top running back prospects in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, but that might change after his performance on Saturday at the NFL Combine.
Washington has been primarily projected as a Day 3 NFL Draft pick, with most recent mock drafts predicting he'll go as a 4th Round-5th Round selection in April, but in the span of seconds on Saturday, his draft stock shot up much higher. How many seconds? Well, 4.33 seconds exactly – which was the amount of time it took the 223-pound tailback to run the 40-yard dash at the Combine.
Washington's mark was the fastest time in the 40-yard dash of any running back at the event that has participated in the drill, and the fifth-fastest time of any participant yet. Washington was the highlight of what NFL reporter Adam Schefter referred to as "the fastest running back group in Combine history," as 10 running back prospects clocked a 40-yard dash time of 4.56 seconds or less, with three backs clocking times of under 4.40 seconds.
It was clear what his performance meant to him and what it meant for his draft stock, as Washington was visibly emotional after completing the drill.
"I just went over and spoke with him, the running back out of Arkansas, and he broke down in tears again with me," said NFL Network reporter Stacey Dales on the air as Washington was shown crying after his 40-yard dash performance. "He said, 'I'm so emotional, man, I've worked my whole life for this.' He's going to do the drill work, but this is why the Combine is so important...and why it's so vital for so many of these young men."
