SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners were unable to reward starting pitcher George Kirby's quality start and fell 5-3 to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners' struggles came in large part due to a career-best performance from Orioles starting pitcher Kyle Bradish, who struck out a career-high 12 batters, walked two and allowed one earned run on five hits in 7.2 innings pitched.

"I thought that the stuff that (Bradish) brought tonight was pretty good," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "The ability to command his fastball like he did and the couple breaking balls that he was throwing tonight, I thought that he had pretty good stuff. Just really didn't allow us to get much going offensively. Didn't get a lot of traffic. He was making it tough to find barrels."

The one run surrendered by Bradish was an RBI single hit by Dominic Canzone in the bottom of the fourth. He brought home center fielder Julio Rodriguez, who reached the at-bat before with a double.

Unfortunately, Rodriguez wasn't able to come up again on the offensive end for the Mariners due to an early exit.

Rodriguez was pulled after he struck out swinging to end the bottom of the sixth inning due to a hamstring spasm. He suffered the injury making a leaping catch in center field in the top of the sixth on a flyout hit by Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.

Outfielder Rob Refsnyder took over Rodriguez's spot in the lineup and popped out in the bottom of the eighth to end the inning and leave runners stranded on the corners.

Seattle finished the game 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left five on-base.

Kirby posted a respectable line in his own right. He fanned five batters and allowed three earned runs on eight hits (one home run) in six innings pitched.

Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to put Baltimore in front 2-0.

Center fielder Leody Taveras hit an RBI triple in the top of the sixth to put the Orioles back in front by two runs, 3-1. Both run-scoring hits came with two outs.

"I just know how much more capable I am at doing better," Kirby said after the game. "Keep working on the little things. Like I said last week, I got that zero (coming), it's gonna do a lot of good."

Both teams put up two runs against the other's respective bullpens.

Orioles left fielder Taylor Ward hit into a 5-4-3 double play with no outs that brought home second baseman Jackson Holliday in the top of the seventh. That hit bolstered Baltimore's lead to 4-1.

Holliday hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning that gave the Orioles their final run and a 5-1 advantage.

The Mariners cut Baltimore's lead (and eventual winning margin) to two runs with a pair of respective first-pitch, solo home runs hit by designated hitter Dominic Canzone and second baseman Cole Young in the bottom of the ninth.
