Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson speaks to the media after an 8-3 win against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. | Teren Kowatsch/Roundtable Sports
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners snapped a three-series losing streak and got back to one game over .500 (44-43) following an 8-3 win against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners more-than doubled the Angels' offensive output (13 hits vs. six) and did it in an unconventional way for the defending American League West champions.
Twelve of Seattle's 13 hits Tuesday were singles. The only extra-base hit was a double hit by designated hitter Randy Arozarena in the bottom of the seventh.
Through the first five innings of the game, Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo and Los Angeles starter Jose Soriano were locked into a pitcher's duel in which neither side showed any sides of blinking.
The first crack happened in the bottom of the sixth, and it led to the glass floor shattering under Soriano.
The M's scored five of their eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. The scoring output was kick started with three straight singles. The third of those hits came courtesy of Arozarena, who hit an RBI single to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. That hit was also the one that ended Soriano's day.
Soriano finished his outing with nine strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs allowed on six hits in five innings pitched. Soriano was dinged with the other two runs due to runners inherited by reliever Chase Silseth who ended up scoring.
After catcher Cal Raleigh drew a walk to load the bases, second baseman Cole Young hit an RBI single to up the lead to 2-0. Arozarena scored on a wild pitch, and right fielder Weston Wilson hit a two-RBI single to give the Mariners a 5-0 lead going into the seventh.
"(Soriano's) a tough customer," M's manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Tuesday. "It looked like, early on, for a while he really couldn't locate his fastball very well and then the breaking ball kind of came alive for him. Got some punchouts with that. He struck out a fair number of guys but we did get our walks, we did get our hits from time to time and (created) some traffic. I think we knew it was just a matter of time before we took advantage."
Woo carried his stellar outing in the top of the seventh inning. He finished his day with five fanned batters, one walk and two earned runs allowed on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched. He set the franchise record for most consecutive scoreless innings (32) in the process.
The 2025 All-Star posted the quality start after a rough outing on the road where he allowed five earned runs in four innings pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 24.
"Honestly, I think the answer is that there is no answer," Woo said after the game. "I don't feel like I really did anything different from last start to this start besides just a few tweaks here and there. I think the more that I just keep looking for this perfect mix of everything — it doesn't really exist. Baseball has its ups and downs. Baseball has its times where you just get your butt kicked and you have to weather it and keep going. I think the only answer is just to stop putting so much pressure on myself and just kind of take a step back and keep playing baseball."
Woo's was attributed the two runs via inherited runners. He exited the game with runners on the corners and one out.
Against reliever Eduard Bazardo, Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe hit an RBI single and and shortstop Zach Neto hit a two-RBI single. Bazardo was dinged with the third run of the inning, and Los Angeles cut its deficit to 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Mariners put the game away for good in the bottom half of the frame.
Center fielder Julio Rodriguez hit a lead-off single and Arozarena hit his double two at-bats later to set Seattle up with runners at second and third with one out.
After Young drew a 10-pitch walk two batters after Arozarena to set the M's up with the bases loaded and two outs, shortstop Colt Emerson hit a two-RBI single to bolster Seattle's lead to 7-3.
Left fielder Victor Robles hit an RBI single after for the eventual 8-3 final.
Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs and Emerson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
"I feel like I'm in a really good spot," Emerson said after the game. "Now it's just stack days and keep on pushing. Baseball's really hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it. At this point, staying committed, staying convicted and being myself and watching the guys ahead of me."

The Mariners stayed a half-game out of first place in the American League West but maintained their 1.5-game hold on the final AL wild card spot with the victory.
The M's will have an off day Wednesday due to the World Cup. They'll wrap up the series against the Halos at 6:40 p.m. PT on Thursday at T-Mobile Park.
Bryce Miller will start for Seattle and Walbert Urena will start for Los Angeles.
