SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have won three of their last four games, including taking two-of-three contests against the San Francisco Giants over the weekend at T-Mobile Park, and will be looking to keep that momentum rolling in a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds, which begins at 6:40 p.m. PT on Monday.
Starting pitcher George Kirby will get the first nod for the Mariners and he'll enter Monday's contest on a very impressive streak.
Dating back to an outing against the Baltimore Orioles on June 10 at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Kirby has a streak of five consecutive quality starts, and will be looking to make it six against the Reds.
"I think he's done a great job continuing to refine his mindset, his mental approach on the mound," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview Monday. "As we've said before, that's incredibly vital. He's continued to that. His ability to attack the zone has been big. I think he's found himself in better counts here, particularly in his last few starts. Just continued to work his heater. ... And it's made his secondaries that much better. He's kind of putting a lot of things together."
Over Kirby's quality start streak, he has a 3.09 ERA and has struck out 34 batters in 32 innings of work. His last home outing was an eight-inning showing against the Los Angeles Angels on June 29 where he fanned seven, walked one and allowed two earned runs on seven hits (one home run).
Before Kirby's streak, he had a 4.04 ERA and struck out 64 batters in 78 innings pitched across 13 starts. He had six total quality starts before his streak began.
For the season, the 2023 All-Star has posted a 3.76 ERA and has fanned 98 hitters in 110 innings pitched across 18 outings with 11 quality starts on the season — the most on the starting rotation.
Coincidentally, this time of year also coincides with when Kirby set a franchise and career-best streak when it came to quality starts.
From June 9, 2024-July 26, 2024, Kirby had a streak of nine consecutive quality starts, which set a franchise record. Kirby's current streak is his longest since that time.
"George is coming off a couple of really good outings," Wilson said. "One at here, one on the road. He's been very consistent for us. ... He's been a complete pitcher for us the last several times and looking for more of that tonight."
