Updating a previous report, Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports the Seattle Seahawks have released DT Norman Hand, after he declined to accept a pay cut.

Normand Hand would be an upgrade. But the Cards way of evaluating FAs and attracting good players released by other teams is still questionable, even after declaring that they would go after "middle-leve FAs."

Anyone knows what the Cards meant by "middle-level FAs" and what's the average salary and signing bonus paid to the FAs that has been recruited this off season?

I agree that Hand would be a big improvement. Teams would not have to double team him, but our run stopping ability would be a ton better. Stick Chowderhead in the middle and let him eat up some space !

Actually I might have to take that back. looking at his stats I thought he was more productive. Hand really does not generate that many tackles and at 310 he is not really the giant I thought he was in the middle. We need a Ted Washigton to plug the middle or DT of that caliber. It's a mistake to base evaluation of DT's solely on stats. The more important thing is, do they plug up two blockers and disrupt the flow of the play? Washington had a great game in the Super and he didn't get one tackle.

I'd guess Hand is about 30 or 31. Still not that old.

Is he better than Davis/Bell/Tanner? Probably a little. I'm not one to say that we should bring in every WR or CB that gets cut, but, an opportunity may be presenting itself here. DT, especially the two gap DT, is our weakest point on the defense.

I mean, at least bring him in, right? Would it hurt just to bring him in?

Wasn't Hand traded to Seattle for a 6th? I was furious when a report came out that Arizona was offered the same deal on draft day and turned it down. Wasn't Tony Gilbert our 6th pick last year?

Even looking at his stats you can see Washigton is more productive. Also he has almost 55 Lb's on Hand and some height to boot. I like Hand, but we need a Ted Washigton mold or a Gilbert Brown type DT. look at Washigton's numbers from 94-97 they look great.

Well, yeah, that was seven years ago and Washington was not 365 back then either. I know Washington is a better player. But, the question should not be about whether Hand's as good as Washington. It should be, "Is Hand better than Tanner (or Davis)?"
