After tearing his ACL and LCL in Week 15 last season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears to be on track for the 2026 NFL season.

The Chiefs are set to host the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 1, and Denver's preparing as if Mahomes will be ready to play. Broncos coach Sean Payton spoke about the quarterback's status during an interview with Trey Wingo earlier this month.

"I do," Payton said when asked if he expects Mahomes to be ready for MNF. "Look, just having been around him and played some golf with him, and I think when you see the clips that you see, I think — he's gonna attack it the same way Bo [Nix]'s attacking his rehab. And they're very competitive, they're gonna everything-plus to be ready."

Payton referenced videos of Mahomes playing golf as evidence of the QB being far along in his recovery. Payton also implied that the NFL scheduling the game for MNF is also a sign of Mahomes being ready for Week 1.

"Shoot, he was hitting that driver the other day with that sleeve on, it looked, it's a tough — the left knee is always a hard knee to have hurt when you're playing golf because your weight transitions over there. I think we expect [him to play], certainly the networks and the league do as well, and we have a ton of respect for him. He's fun to watch."

KC will host Denver on Monday, Sept. 14, with the game nationally televised on ESPN and ABC.
