The Denver Broncos will play starters (with some exceptions) for about 10-15 snaps in their preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, coach Sean Payton said after Wednesday's practice.
The Broncos will be playing on the road at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which features an artificial turf playing surface. Denver quarterback Bo Nix, who is coming back from a broken ankle suffered in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs in January, won't play on Friday.
Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger will each get a half in Atlanta. Nix will play in the next two preseason games at home, Payton said.
“I’m excited," Nix said after Monday's practice. "I think preseason’s always a great time to get back out there and get your feet wet a little bit and see defenses in a live situation before the first game.”
As for the Falcons, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the rest of their starters will play a series, or about 10 plays, coach Kevin Stefanski said on Wednesday.
After facing the Falcons in Georgia, the Broncos will return home to Colorado to host the Green Bay Packers (Aug. 21) and Minnesota Vikings (Aug. 28) at Empower Field at Mile High. After preseason, Denver will have until Aug. 30 to finalize an initial 53-man roster for the 2026 NFL season.
