The Atlanta Falcons are set to kick off the 2026 NFL preseason this Friday against the Denver Broncos, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to make his team debut as the QB1.
"Tua will start in this game," Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters head of Wednesday's practice. "The plan for playing time is in pencil. We'll play our starters a series, maybe 10 plays."
Stefanski previously said he planned to play the starters in the first and third preseason games, which is a big change from previous Falcons head coach Raheem Morris.
On the other side, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he plans to play his team's starters against Atlanta on Friday.
"They’ll play, but we haven’t gone through the role yet," said Payton. "Every year everyone talks about it, and you have to build a callus. And so, I just believe in that. And now there’s some, maybe based on injury or where they’re at, we might hold back. But generally, we’re going to want to play them some in the first game, a little bit more in the second, and then we’ll see where we’re at in the third.”
While Payton emphasized the importance of getting guys acclimated to game speed, we still don't know if quarterback Bo Nix will suit up for the Broncos in the preseason opener.
