Sean Payton promoted Davis Webb from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator this offseason, and Payton even gave up play-calling, handing those duties over to Webb.
It's a fascinating development for the Denver Broncos because Payton has called plays for most his head-coaching career, but he believes the switch will help the team take the next step in 2026.
Fans and pundits are now eager to see if Webb will make many (if any) tweaks to the offense. During mandatory minicamp last month, Payton was asked if it will be his or Webb's offense this season.
“It’s the Broncos’ [offense]," Payton said. "I said this at the beginning, and I mean it. I’m fully supportive of wanting us to be successful because when you get older, you just want to win. You always want to win, but you recognize maybe some of the things, maybe mistakes that you made when you were younger where you paid too much attention to other things. The same, it’s our defense. That has to be the approach.
"The independent one side of the ball, this side… That’s not us, and it won’t be because in order to play real good defense, there are certain things you have to do offensively. That complementary football had a lot to do with how we ended up with a lot of wins a year ago. So we’ll be mindful of all of it.”
Denver fans have seen Webb call plays before, although they might not have realized it. The former quarterback called plays in the team's 27-7 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals last summer, and Payton gave him a game ball for his fast, efficient play-calling following the victory. The regular season will obviously be a bigger test, but Payton clearly has confidence in Webb going into the 2026 campaign.
