Sean Payton's done it again.

The Denver Broncos are hiring Jeff Schmedding as their new inside linebackers coach, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Schmedding will replace Greg Manusky, who was fired following the 2024 season.

Schmedding, 47, most recently served as a defensive coordinator at Washington State (2023-2024) and Auburn (2022) before landing in Denver, arguably making him overqualified for a positional coaching role.

This isn't the first time Payton has pulled off this kind of hire. Last year, the Broncos hired former Wisconsin defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jim Leonhard as a defensive backs coach. Leonhard was way overqualified for that position and he has since been promoted to defensive pass game coordinator/assistant head coach.

As for Schmedding, this is his first role in the NFL after coaching at the college level from 2004-2024. In addition to DC roles, Schmedding has also coached special teams, linebackers and safeties in the NCAA.

Denver previously announced eight new members on the coaching staff earlier this month. In addition to Manusky, the Broncos also fired outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite (after he was charged with assaulting a police officer).

Schmedding is now set to coach Denver's inside linebackers with the recently-promoted Isaac Shewmaker coaching the team's outside linebackers.
