There are currently seven head-coaching jobs available in the NFL, with the Baltimore Ravens opening being the most recent after John Harbaugh was fired. Sean McVay has helped turn assistants into head coaches a number of times in his career and the next could be defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
Though McVay hasn’t gotten any interview requests from teams for Shula, he fully expects that to change. And it could just be because teams aren’t permitted to interview candidates on teams playing on wild-card weekend, which Shula and the Rams are.
McVay was asked if he’s gotten any requests for Shula or other assistant coaches and after cracking a joke about teams looking to trade for himself, he said he knows the calls for Shula are coming.
“I got a couple requests for some trades from me. No, I'm just kidding,” he joked. “I don't think so yet, but I do know that those are – based on some of the things that I've heard, I would imagine that Chris will get a couple requests. I'd be very surprised if that doesn't happen. But nothing official as of yet. Not anybody else.”
Shula and Mike LaFleur are expected to be the Rams’ top candidates for head coaching jobs this winter. Nate Scheelhaase could also be someone teams consider for offensive coordinator positions.
The Rams were fortunate enough to retain both Shula and LaFleur in 2025 after losing Zac Robinson and Raheem Morris in 2024, but a departure or two could be coming this offseason for Los Angeles.
