The early portion of the 2025 NFL Draft went swimmingly for the Los Angeles Rams. They traded back 20 spots from No. 26 to 46, acquired a 2026 first-rounder from the Atlanta Falcons and still managed to add a hyper-athletic tight end who should have an immediate and long-term impact on offense.
It’s not to say the Rams would’ve taken Ferguson at No. 26 had they not found a trade partner, but Sean McVay explicitly said they would’ve “felt good” about selecting him that early.
With all the excitement about Los Angeles’ top rookie, McVay told Adam Schein of SiriusXM that the Rams have “big plans” for Ferguson.
“For us to be able to go back, still get a player that we would’ve felt good with earlier in terms of where we would’ve drafted him, was a really big deal,” he said. “I'm excited about how it unfolded. I give a ton of credit to Tony Pastoors, obviously Les and our group, but it worked out really well and we were super excited about being able to come away with Terrance Ferguson, who we have big plans for.”
Les Snead already talked about what the addition of Ferguson allows the Rams to do offensively, hinting at an expansion of 12 personnel – something that was a staple of McVay’s offense in Washington before he was hired by the Rams.
With Tyler Higbee and Ferguson potentially atop the depth chart, the Rams have two capable tight ends on the roster who can block and catch passes down the field.
“He’s a versatile player. It enables us to be a little bit more multiple in some of the personnel we can present to defenses,” McVay added.
Playing tight end comes with a sharp learning curve from college to the NFL but the Rams sound confident Ferguson can navigate it well and have an early impact.
