Did the Seattle Seahawks ace their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft?

The Seahawks owned the No.18 overall pick in the first round of last year’s draft and selected left guard Grey Zabel with the pick. Zabel started in all 17 games for Seattle last season at left guard and allowed two sacks as well as 24 total pressures on the year. However, the Seahawks may have found even more success last season had they made a different selection with the pick.

According to Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport in his 2025 NFL re-draft, the Seahawks go in a different direction than Zabel and select their current starting safety Nick Emmanwori at No. 18 overall, one round earlier than where he was originally taken in the draft.

The Seahawks selected Emmanwori with the No. 35 overall pick in the draft last year. The South Carolina product emerged as one of the best rookie defenders last season, finishing the year as the runner-up for the 2025 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Seattle’s defense played outstandingly in 2025 en route to a Super Bowl victory at the end of the season thanks in part to brilliant play from Emmanwori all season long, making him worth an earlier pick in the draft. In turn, offensive guards were still on the board for Seattle to select from round 2 and onward.
