There are no consolation prizes in the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts' Week 15 loss to Seattle is still a loss. But the performance by the Seahawks' defense in the Super Bowl sheds some added light on what was an impressive performance in Week 15 by Phillip Rivers.

After being retired for nearly five years and back in with the Colts for less than a week, Rivers started against what was a dominant Seattle defense.

He didn't put up flashy numbers by any means, totaling 120 yards, but he was efficient, completing 18-of-27 passes as the Colts' offense leaned on the running game and the quick game in this contest.

But what Rivers did provide was a steady presence at quarterback -- getting the Colts' offense into favorable looks, managing the game, and taking care of the ball.

He even orchestrated what was nearly a game-winning drive, putting the Colts in field goal range for Blake Grupe to drill a 60-yard attempt, giving Indianapolis the lead with only 47 seconds left.

Unfortunately, the Colts' defense would surrender a field goal of their own -- giving Seattle the two-point win.

Along with Rivers' performance being impressive, it was a very good day for Shane Steichen as well, who crafted a game plan on the fly that fit Rivers and put the Colts in a position to win.

The Seattle defense led the NFL in scoring this season, surrendering just 16.9 points per game. In the Super Bowl, the Patriots mustered 13 points and struggled to move the ball for much of the game, averaging 4.9 yards per play.
