The Seattle Seahawks have experienced a busy NFL free agency period. After winning Super Bowl 60, it was evident that the Seahawks wouldn't be able to retain all of their in-house talents. They've lost players like Kenneth Walker III, Boye Mafe, and Riq Woolen to free agency.
John Schneider did manage to re-sign starters like Josh Jobe and Rashid Shaheed. In order to sustain their status as a contender, the Seahawks had to get younger and cheaper at certain positions. That strategy will ensure there's enough financial flexibility to sign players like Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Devon Witherspoon, and Sam Darnold to contract extensions.
The Seahawks have done an excellent job. According to this data, the Seahawks have the youngest class of free agents signed this week.
Schneider has signed role players like Emanuel Wilson and Rodney Thomas II. They've also re-signed contributors like Brandon Pili, AJ Finley, and D'Anthony Bell. Schneider has reached his objectives.
When trying to build a Super Bowl contender last offseason, Schneider was willing to sign aging assets like Cooper Kupp and DeMarcus Lawrence. Now tasked with trying to sustain success, Schneider is getting younger and cheaper where necessary. It's an example of why he's among the best GM's in the NFL.
