The Seattle Seahawks have various notable players set to hit NFL free agency on March 11. Some of the notable names the Seahawks should try to re-sign include Kenneth Walker III, Josh Jobe, and Rashid Shaheed. One of the players who feels destined to sign elsewhere is EDGE Boye Mafe.
General manager John Schneider selected Mafe with the 40th overall selection in the 2022 NFL draft. Since then, Schneider has continued investing in EDGEs, drafting Derick Hall and signing DeMarcus Lawrence. Mafe has now reached the conclusion of his four-year rookie contract and there doesn't appear to be mutual interest in extending him.
Mafe exploded as a sophomore, registering a career-high 9.0 sacks. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher followed that up with a respectable 6.0 sacks. This past season, Mafe regressed by notching only two quarterback takedowns. He'll be disappointed to have failed to capitalize in a contract year.
Sack numbers don't tell the complete story however. Mafe still notched 40 pressures. Mafe's pass-rush-win-rate of 11.3% was actually higher than Lawrence's (11%), according to Pro Football Focus. He was winning, but finishing wasn't an issue.
Spotrac projects Mafe to sign a contract in free agency worth $12.2 million per campaign. He possesses the seventh-highest market value among pending free agent EDGEs, and some of the names above him probably won't even hit free agency. Expect Mafe to have a robust market with numerous potential suitors.
