While the two best defensive tackles in Super Bowl LX are deservedly the elite pair of Williams’ in Leonard and Milton, the Seattle Seahawks would not be there without Byron Murphy II, either.

While Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Sam Darnold deservedly get most of the credit, Leonard Williams barely gets enough for being arguably the best player on the team this season as an All-Pro. Murphy gets even less playing his same position, but got five All-Pro votes himself. He was instrumental in the Seahawks defensive build, which despite featuring another All-Pro in Devon Witherspoon and vote getter in Nick Emmanwori on the outside, was built from the inside to out, and the front to back.

Murphy had nine sacks from the interior of the defensive line, tied for third in the entire NFL (with L. Williams) behind only superstars Zach Allen and Jeffery Simmons. There’s a trend at this position, which is that they just don’t get as much respect as they deserve despite being as important as any to the team’s success. Their impact won’t be as obvious to the casual observer who was focused on their fantasy football players the whole regular season and still tends to lock onto the flashier positions come playoff time, but the league values defensive tackles way more than they’ll understand. Murphy’s the perfect example of that.

Not only was he key in beating the Los Angeles Rams twice down the stretch to win the NFC West and the NFC Championship, but they were desperate to draft him to replace Aaron Donald before Seattle swooped him right in front of them. The video below of Sean McVay in the war room shows you how much the NFL’s top minds- even those with an offensive lean- valued Murphy’s skillset coming out of college; let alone rate him now that he’s grown into a player receiving All-Pro votes.

The best moment of this offseason

Sean McVay was desperate for Byron Murphy

“Try and go up and get Murphy”

“I would try and get this guy. He makes a huge difference to me… I don’t think he gets past 16”

“He’s WAY better than anybody”

“Wanna call Schneider??” (In defeat) pic.twitter.com/F2AtVygrni
