There is no question that the Seattle Seahawks made the right move by saying goodbye to Pete Carroll and hiring Mike Macdonald as their new head coach. This was and is a home-run hire which modernized the Seahawks' operation and gave them a cutting-edge mind who can max out in the NFL world of 2025-2026. Pete Carroll's 2025 disaster with the Las Vegas Raiders showed a coach whose personnel decisions weren't as sharp as they needed to be. Macdonald, now in the Super Bowl in Year 2 of his Seattle tenure, looks like the next great head coach in the NFL. The Seahawks clearly played their cards right. This is Macdonald's team and achievement to be sure.
However, for all the ways in which Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider frontally and fully deserve the credit for bringing the Seahawks back to the Super Bowl, it's not as though Pete Carroll didn't make significant contributions to the effort. Carroll needed to be fired, but before he was shown the door, he still did a few important things -- with Schneider -- to set the foundation Macdonald then turned into an elite operation.
First of all, Pete Carroll was willing to cut the cord with Russell Wilson. This was the prelude to the Seahawks having to do the same thing with Carroll himself. Trading Russ was the gutsy, mature move winning organizations make. Just because someone has won a lot in the past doesn't mean he's the right answer for the future. Carroll and Schneider had the maturity to realize they needed a reset at quarterback and could get a lot of players in return.
Here's the return on the Seahawks' investment:
As you can see, the Seahawks parlayed Russell Wilson into several pieces of their current Super Bowl roster. Pete Carroll shares in the credit for that with John Schneider. Carroll specifically was willing to take Devon Witherspoon at pick No. 5 in the 2023 NFL draft. It was by no means a lock that Seattle would take Witherspoon. It was the last truly great decision of the Carroll-Schneider Seahawks organization, and it gave Mike Macdonald the high-end talent needed to quickly restore Seattle to a Super Bowl level.
This is Mike Macdonald's and John Schneider's Seattle Seahawk Super Bowl team. Those two men made this happen. We can still acknowledge Pete Carroll's role as a supporting actor and contributor. You know he'll be rooting hard for the Seahawks in Super Bowl LX on February 8.

Looking at the haul the Seahawks got by trading Russell Wilson:
Players:
- Drew Lock
- Noah Fant
- Shelby Harris
Picks and who they became:
- Charles Cross
- Boye Mafe
- Tyreke Smith
- Devon Witherspoon
- Derek Hall
Probably the best trade ever
