When Mike Macdonald took over as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, the differences in his leadership style compared to Pete Carroll was evident from the get-go. In his first year as the top man in Seattle, the Seahawks did something no coach had done since the 1991 season: they participated in joint practices. Prior to Seattle's preseason Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans, the Seahawks traveled to Nashville early to test their mettle against their AFC foe.

Well the Seahawks won't have to wait another 33 years before their next joint practice, as it will occur once more this summer. On Tuesday it was announced the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers will have a joint practice. Seattle travels to Green Bay for the preseason finale in Week 3, their only road contest in August.

Packers will have joint practices with the Colts in Indy and Seahawks in Green Bay this summer, per source. Those sessions will precede second and third preseason games.

During the league's annual ownership meetings in early April, Macdonald stated he wants not one but two different joint practice sessions. One at home and one on the road. The Seahawks head coach has earned half of what he wanted, now he just needs to find a suitable partner to complete his lofty goal for the exhibition games.

Unfortunately, it does not look like Macdonald is going to get his wish. Seattle's two preseason home opponents are the Kansas City Chiefs, and his predecessor's team, the Las Vegas Raiders. Carroll was strictly against it, and Andy Reid has never once hosted a joint practice as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles or the Kansas City Chiefs.

So the Packers will have to do. When the preseason used to be four games, Week 3 was considered the "dress rehearsal" for the regular season, as many starters would play late into the game. But now that has been moved up to Week 2, and Week 3 is what Week 4 used to be... the final cleanup of those on the roster bubble. Still, the Packers are a good opponent.

Green Bay dominated Seattle last year at Lumen Field, claiming a 30-13 blowout victory. Quarterback Geno Smith was knocked out of the game, forcing the Seahawks to roll with Sam Howell for the majority of the second half. But the Packers were clearly the better team at all phases of the game. Preseason or not, this will be a decent barometer to see if Seattle has found a way to build better depth to close the gap with an NFC rival.
