The San Francisco 49ers cancelled their Mandatory Minicamp scheduled for this week after head coach Kyle Shanahan made a deal with his players.

Coach Kyle Shanahan has canceled next week's mandatory minicamp as a reward for 100-percent attendance this week and the work put in during the 49ers' offseason program, a team official says.

According to Mike Florio of NFL on NBC, Shanahan told the players they would be able to miss the ‘mandatory’ portion if they showed 100% attendance at the ‘voluntary’ OTAs. It seems all their players attended and the entire team was able to skip. This isn’t completely out of the ordinary for Shanahan, who often rewards the team by canceling the last day, but is a gutsy call nonetheless. 49ers reporter Matt Barrows had this to say on the matter:

Matt Barrows on Kyle Shanahan canceling 49ers mandatory minicamp:

“I’m a little surprised. They always cancel the last day of minicamp. That’s sorta the surprise, the gift Kyle gives to his players for practicing hard. Now they’re giving them the whole minicamp off. I’m a bit… pic.twitter.com/WkEKdXa6xA

The NFC West is easily the most talented division in football in 2026, and while they can seem similar during the season, its three contenders are taking drastically different approaches to the offseason. The Seattle Seahawks are busy practicing their new “run it forward” mantra and staying even-keel. The Los Angeles Rams have embraced their Hollywood ways by trading for mega-stars Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie while shockingly drafting a quarterback. It feels like the 49ers are trying to get ahead on their homework, knowing their grade is fully dependent on their ability to ace a few extremely hard tests all year. Their “skipping minicamp” strategy is fascinating, though, and would be tenfold if other teams join them in the coming years.
