ELKHART ― The most motivated person in North Side Gym Friday night just also happened to be the best basketball player in the historic venue.

That's why the Northridge boys basketball team will play for a Class 4A sectional title Saturday night.

Senior Brady Scholl did everything in a big way to pace his No. 6 Raiders to a 53-29 throttling of conference rival Goshen in the second semifinal contest.

Scholl scored 17 points, including 13 in the final period as the Raiders outscored Goshen 20-3.

Northridge, who moves to 23-1 with its 17th straight win, will face Warsaw (13-11) in the sectional final Saturday, March 7 inside North Side Gym. Warsaw edged past host Elkhart 37-35 in the first semifinal game Friday night. Northridge beat Warsaw 48-30 on Jan. 9.

Goshen, which loses seven seniors, finished at 17-7.

A stoked crowd some 5,000 strong saw the Raiders prove why they are the team expected to cut down nets come Saturday night.

Scholl, an Indiana Wesleyan recruit, also finished with 17 rebounds to go with seven block shots in a truly Indiana All-Star like performance.

Scholl was held to just 13 points, including five in the final half, when the Raiders lost their lone game at Goshen in NLC play back on Dec. 20. Goshen outscored the Raiders 16-6 in the pivotal third period in that game.

"I was very motivated tonight," said the 6-7 Scholl. "I've thought about (that first game at Goshen) all year. I wanted to see Goshen again. I was fired up for this one."

Scholl simply dominated the final frame. Northridge led just 33-26 at the end of the third period before using a 14-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Goshen did not score in the final frame until a pair of free throws with 3:25 left.

"I thought in that fourth quarter we just took over," said Northridge coach Scott Radeker. "It was a complete team effort. We moved the ball.

"I credit our whole team for finding Brady in the fourth quarter. In the first half, we were not patient and we settled for some shots. But in that final quarter we got him the ball."

Scholl went scoreless in the opening half, but made his presence felt with nine rebounds and five blocked shots. The Raiders led just 19-15 at intermission.

Goshen kept the game close in the third period thanks to senior Braxton Cline. The guard drained three treys and scored all 11 of his team's points in the period.

"Once I got a couple of shots to go in in the fourth quarter, I gained confidence," Scholl said. "In that first half, I just wanted to do what I could to help my team. I thought that we played a great game defensively.

"It was a great atmosphere here tonight. A shoutout to our community for showing up the way that they did for us."

Radeker praised the preparation of his team.

"We practiced really well this week," said the eighth-year mentor of the Raiders. "I felt a little bit of pressure tonight. Everyone is saying you have to win this game. We've earned those expectations though. ... If Brady is not an Indiana All-Star, then I don't know who is from the North. He is a huge rim protector for us. Tonight, he did not score in that first half, but he impacted the game with his defense and rebounding."

Senior Hayden Johnson had 10 points and junior Karsyn Rumfelt also scored 10. Junior Hayden Gorball added eight points.

Cline finished with 13 points to pace Goshen. Star guard Levi Sawatzky, who poured in 25 points in the win over Northridge in December, finished his brilliant prep career with nine points Friday night.

Warsaw hangs on

A fierce rally fell just short for host Elkhart in the first semifinal clash Friday night.

The Lions roared back from a 14-point deficit, only to lose to the Tigers. A 3-point shot by Quinn Chandler of the Lions was way off at the final horn.

Elkhart, which trailed 23-9 at halftime, lost due to its free throw shooting. The hosts, who beat Warsaw 47-39 on Jan. 31 at Elkhart, went 3-of-15 from the charity stripe.

The Lions still had a chance after Warsaw did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter and had eight turnovers. Elkhart's quickness in its full-court pressure turned the tide in the final frame as the hosts were down 32-21 entering the fourth period.

"We hit free of those free throws we win this game," said first-year Elkhart coach Bodie Bender. "Our full-court pressure caused them problems late, but the hole we dug at the start hurt us. We let some of their guys get open early for threes and that hurt us."

The Lions were also hurt when star freshman Kaleb Anderson-Mitchell left the game with an apparent knee injury with 3:04 to play. He tried to come back with 16.9 seconds left, but had to leave the game again.

Elkhart took a 35-33 lead with 2:08 to play on a layup by Samarcus Gipson. The Tigers tied the game at 35-35 on two free throws by junior Sam Lara with 2:01 left. Elkhart then had a key turnover and Warsaw milked the clock. Lara hit two more free throws with 16.9 seconds to play for a 37-35 lead. The Lions then missed two shot attempts inside before the ball went out of bounds off Warsaw with 1.6 seconds left. An inbounds pass went to Chandler, whose trey was well off the mark at the final horn.

Elkhart finished at 11-12.

"I don't think a lot of people expected us to win double digit games this season," Bender said. "Our kids never backed down against a tough schedule. Our seniors laid the foundation for the future. We have some good pieces coming back. We just have to get in the gym and work on shooting."

Gipson had 10 points and Anderson-Mitchell eight to lead Elkhart.

Elkhart loses four seniors.

Sophomore Drew Jones led Warsaw with 14 points. Senior guard Mydin Burgher, the top scorer at 18 ppg., had just seven points before fouling out.
