I know BA is stubborn but I think Keim is going to force him to make some changes if he wants to remain the Cards coach.

Staff changes I think are plausible:
Obviously, Amos Jones gets canned.
Pagano is going to be out in Indy. Bring him in as a co-defensive coordinator with Bettcher. I don't think they'll outright fire Bettcher, or demote him. I think a veteran like Pagano will be very helpful.

Fire Daryl Drake. I'll be honest, I had to look up to see who the Cards WR coach is. It's funny on the Cards website it mentions Drakes accomplishments as having coached LF. Drake has had zero impact on Larry's success and Larry would be just as great had I been coaching the WR's. I look at how no receivers have developed under Drake and you can even say almost all have regressed, starting with Michael Floyd.

I think those staff changes and BA stays as I don't think there will be sweeping changes.

Of course this is all dependent on BA wanting to stay and being open to changes.

BA has a very hard time firing anyone. Perhaps it's because he got fired several times in his career and just has too much compassion. However, I did read that Amos Jones contract expires this season so BA just doesn't have to renew it. He does need other changes as you mentioned above. I think after two losing seasons he will be more adaptable to change, at least I hope so. Bottom line is he may be back for another year if he doesn't retire per his health which none of us are really know anything.

I think a challenge is whether Arians can recruit anyone of value into the program. He wasn’t able to hire an experienced DC when we had some of the most talent in the league. If Pagano were willing to come, it would help.

The problem is BA heads into the last year of his contract and as such and with his retirement looming he is essentially a lame duck. As result, what coaches would want to come to Arizona on a one year gig?

BA has already said that if MB&SK want to fire Amos Jones, then they would have to fire him (BA).

Some of the assistant coaches contracts are up this year---that presents another problem for MB. Will those coaches accept a one year contract?

BA has backed the FO into a corner and it would seem that the most logical choice is to move on from BA and his staff this year. It might all be a moot point if what some of us suspect is true, that BA has indicated to MB&SK that this was going to be his last year. It looks pretty clear at this point that BA is just playing out the string.

BA, from the get-go, was arrogant enough to think that he could hand the DC reins over to Bettcher. Do you have knowledge of any experienced DCs BA interviewed or had interest for the job? Wade Phillips and Jim Schwartz were available, but was there ever any reported interest in either one of them?

BA's m.o. when it comes to hiring is croneyism, and not based on hiring the most qualified candidates.

I don’t get the Drake focus, every one of our WRs is home grown and out performing their abilities if we go by our criticisms of them. John Brown is sick, Nelson had the drops in college but catches bombs from Palmer, Jaron is a success for an UDFA, Floyd did well for Floyd given he is an alcoholic. THIS year we have problems, but we also have 3 QBs throwing the ball and issues team wide.

I would think you would want to fire the DB coaches since they haven’t turned anyone we have in-house into a competent CB.

Oh yeah, demote or fire Bettcher, he doesn’t have the knack for play calling (ignoring his other deficiencies), he doesn’t need help being mediocre, he needs a different position that benefits the team more if you are going to keep him.

Who could Arians bring in that helps us? Old Steeler connections I guess (Pitt West here we go again...), and the Pagano tree from his Indy days. Wouldn't mind Pagano, although his units since taking over in Indy have been horrible. Not much talent though.

I don't think this coaching staff is back next year. BA is a very stubborn man who likes control, if Keim insists on coaching changes BA may well just retire. Add in the factor that ARZ most likely will be bringing in a QBOF that may not fit his system and he won't change to his system to cater to a new QB, management may feel a new regime to grow with the QB may be best. Even media is turning on coaching staff, saw an article in AZ Republic today that coaching is to blame not players for disappointing season. Whisenhunt was just as stubborn and wore out his welcome, time for no risk it no biscuit to be no more.

The Jets are headed for a losing season (even though they’re playing hard). I’m still hoping they fire Todd Bowles so the Cards can bring him back. Perhaps he could be given the Assistant HC title next year, then become the HC after BA’s contract expires? Bowles did a lot (IMHO) with the Cards D and it seemed he was well-liked by the players.

The main thing is that the players respected Bowles and I seriously doubt Bettcher has any respect. Bettcher is not much older than some of our vets, he has never played Pro ball to my knowledge, he has nothing on his resume prior which commands attention, he has no influence on his head coach, and his players are hung out to dry with his cardboard consistency, and the man cannot make adjustments which all makes me wonder if one of these players will eventually go off after a game in a interview and say, "look, it's not me and it is not the guy next to me, but the chump calling the plays"... because athletes have their pride and future career to think about

first rule of BA: he says lots of things, nearly all of which have a very short shelf-life.

This may be the root of Arians blind loyalty to his coaches. I daresay after his experience in Pittsburgh where Tomlin went in to get him a raise and left with Arian's walking papers are the source of his "I will never fire a coach" statement.

If the decision is made to jettison Arians then it has to be done ASAP after the season is over and a new coach brought in so they can have a meeting of the minds on a QBOTF if they decide to go that way.

dont under estimate Mike B's desire to win. He cant be happy with the last two years

An owner that truly desires to win wouldn't have let them keep Goodwin. That's when he would have stepped in. You have to hire the right people as an owner and let them do their jobs, but when it gets past the point of ridiculousness, you have to step in. Whether that means firing those people (as should happen in the offseason) or making sure those people fire the ones under them. Otherwise you're just being content to being a laissez-faire owner without real skin in the game.

Wasn't there an article recently that Amos Jones' contract is up after this season? If that is true then it makes it easy to move on without BA firing one of his buddies.

Wow, you sure look at everything through jaded glasses. Was Arians "arrogant" to hire Bowles in the first place? Nobody wanted him. Maybe Arians, after two years working closely with Bettcher, and perhaps with Bowles' recommendation, thought he was up for the job. You can't attribute every mistake to arrogance.

Was Arians arrogant in 2015 when Bettcher was overseeing the #5 ranked D in the league?

Yeah, for four years and 9 weeks Drake was fine, but now he's incompetent? I realize that when the team is losing, everyone looks like an idiot, but... sheesh.

All along I have not put a great deal of blame on James Bettcher---just like any coach who is promoted well before he's ready, he was going to have a tough time selling the players on his authority, especially, as you say JG, when BA tells Bettcher what to call, so often...like telling him to run a full house blitz on Aaron Rodgers in a Hail Mary situation and we know how that turned out. And, when one thinks about it, had Mike McCarthy gone for 2 instead of kicking the PAT to send the game to OT, and Rodgers converts, BA, and all his talk about All or Nothing and Super Bowls would have been 0-2 in the playoffs---and as is remains 1-2, with two blowout losses to Carolina. That's in 5 years.

Found it...

There is a growing belief that Arians will return for one more shot at glory in 2018, along with a revamped coaching staff that will not include special teams coach Amos Jones, whose contract expires after this season.

https://www.azcentral.com/story/spo...eye-future-starting-blaine-gabbert/873015001/

Retaining Arians and the majority of his staff is going to set the franchise backward. It's not just his abrasive, narcissistic style, his constant finger pointing at the players---it's his anachronistic offense, his croneyism over quality coaching gaffes and his "f bomb em and hug em later" philosophy (which worked for his idol Bear Bryant in an era where that was the standard---now things are quite different, aren't they?).

Usually, I feel like I am in step with most of what Bickley says and I like that he is one of the few writers to have the guts to call out the coaches---but Bickley's calling those who have been somewhat critical of Carson Palmer "ignorant fans"---and then proclaiming that Palmer should be in the Cardinals Ring of Fame---is not only condescending (which so many of the Arizona media are with regard to the fans---it's a joke), it is highly debatable. One Pro Bowl level performance in 5 years gets him into the Cardinals' ROF? C'mon, Bickley.

IIRC, they tried to bring in Dick LeBeau to run the defense at the time, but he didn't want to go to the West coast?
