HOCKESSIN – Sanford coach Marcus Thompson had a simple message for his struggling team after the first quarter on March 6.

“You can’t make up 13 points with one shot,” he said.

The top-seeded Warriors settled down and turned up the defense, taking the lead by halftime. Then they made the big plays down the stretch to overcome eighth-seeded Caravel 64-53 in the quarterfinals of the DIAA Girls Basketball Tournament.

“We got off to a slow start, but we knew we were going to push through,” said junior guard Asia Adams, who led Sanford with 23 points. “… Just keep playing hard and we’ll come back and do what we normally do.”

The eighth-seeded Buccaneers (12-9) got off to a flying start, jumping to a 14-2 lead on layups by Amani Sudler and Gabriella Jacquinto and two free throws from Brycelyn Stryckning.

It was 19-6 after the first quarter. But Sanford scored the next 11 points, with a 3-pointer by Kaylee Pechickjian pulling the Warriors within 19-17.

Adams’ drive gave Sanford a 30-28 halftime lead, and the Warriors increased it to 46-38 after three quarters.

Sudler’s inside score pulled the Bucs within 50-47, but Adams went coast to coast to push the Warriors up 58-50 with 2:18 to play.

Sanford (19-1) will meet fourth-seeded Smyrna in the semifinals at 6 p.m. March 10 at the Bob Carpenter Center. Ursuline and St. Elizabeth will follow in the second semifinal.

The quarterfinals of the DIAA Boys Basketball Tournament will be held March 7, with all four games starting at 2 p.m. on the home courts of the higher-seeded teams.
