The Detroit Lions received some outstanding news just days before veterans are scheduled to report for training camp.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, standout tight end Sam LaPorta has been fully cleared to participate in training camp after recovering from back surgery last season.
For a Lions team with Super Bowl aspirations, it’s difficult to overstate how important that development could be.
LaPorta’s 2025 season was cut short after he underwent a microdiscectomy to repair a fully herniated disk in his back.
Despite appearing in just nine games, the 25-year-old still managed to catch 40 passes for 489 yards and three touchdowns, reminding everyone why he remains one of the NFL’s most dangerous young tight ends.
Now, with a clean bill of health, LaPorta is expected to be a full participant when the Lions open training camp.
Since being selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, LaPorta has quickly developed into one of Jared Goff’s favorite targets.
In just three NFL seasons, he has totaled 186 receptions for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns, while earning a Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro honors as a rookie.
His breakout 2023 campaign included 86 receptions, 889 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns, establishing him as one of the league’s premier tight ends.
When healthy, LaPorta gives the Lions another matchup nightmare alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs.
LaPorta’s return couldn’t come at a better time.
The Lions are preparing to begin training camp with expectations of competing for a Super Bowl, and having one of their top offensive playmakers fully healthy gives the offense another major boost heading into the season.
While Detroit will undoubtedly monitor his workload throughout camp, the fact that LaPorta has been medically cleared is an encouraging sign that he’ll be ready for Week 1.
With training camp set to begin next week, the Lions appear to be getting one of their biggest offensive stars back at exactly the right time.
