On Sunday, former USC quarterback Sam Darnold led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. With the win, Darnold became the first ever starting quarterback from USC to win a Super Bowl.

So where was Darnold the day after his Super Bowl title? Back in Southern California, of course. On Monday, Darnold and Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III made the traditional championship visit to Disneyland.

How exactly did the Super Bowl Disney tradition start?

“As for how the tradition started, it was an advertising campaign for The Walt Disney Company that started in 1987, where narrator Mark Champion would ask the player what they were going to do after winning the Super Bowl,” Mary Clarke of USA Today wrote. The ‘I'm going to Disney World’ slogan that the player would respond with grew to be so popular that it made its way to different sports like the NBA Finals and World Series and even onto American Idol.”

With this year’s Super Bowl being held on the West Coast, the Seahawks stars visited Disneyland in Anaheim, rather than Disney World in Orlando. The trip therefore marked a homecoming of sorts for Darnold, who grew up in Southern California and played college football at USC.

When the Trojans have played in the Rose Bowl, the Trojan Marching Band has traditionally held a pep rally at Disneyland leading up to the game. The most recent such occurrence came in 2017, when Darnold led USC to its 25th Rose Bowl victory. Eight years later, Darnold was once again responsible for a trip to Disneyland—only this time, one that he actually got to enjoy himself.
