The names and faces change every year, but Saltillo's girls continue to be a soccer state title contender year in and year out.
The Tigers are in search of their fourth consecutive state title with the playoffs right around the corner. Saltillo had rattled off 13 straight wins before suffering a loss to Caledonia last week.
“Kind of got some things straightened out after November and then obviously had a pretty good run there through December and the beginning of January,” Saltillo head coach Matthew Reeder said. “We played a really solid Caledonia team. We did all of the right things, we just didn’t score. We led all the statistical categories, except for the score. It was just one of those nights. But sometimes, those things are good to kind of bring us back to reality and get us back focused on what we need to focus on.”
Saltillo graduated much of its offensive production from last year, but the Tigers have mostly figured things out as the season has gone on and players have stepped up.
“I think we graduated around 60 goals last year,” Reeder said. “Obviously, figuring out how to score a little differently. … Players like Avery Holly have stepped in and obviously been a focal point for us offensively, I think she’s over 30 goals. We’ve got several others. Brooke Davis, I think she has right at 14 or 15, maybe, and then Emma Bailey’s got 10.”
During that 13-game win streak, the Tigers didn’t allow a goal, and they’ve conceded just eight goals total this season. With Arkansas State signee Lynley McCarley in goal and an experienced defense in front of her, it’s a challenge to score on Saltillo.
Going for a fourth straight title means a lot of pressure, but the Tigers have had plenty of experience in playing in big moments.
“A beautiful part of this is because we’ve had some success, we’ve got a lot of experience,” Reeder said. “We’ve kind of dealt with it this year, having a target on our back. We’ve had a target on our back for the last three years, so we expect everybody’s best shot. And because of that, we prepare in that manner. Hopefully, we can continue to move forward.”
Extended season
The basketball season has been extended into next week for teams still trying to make up region games.
The MHSAA has allowed teams to play on Monday and Tuesday if needed. Winter Storm Fern wreaked havoc on the area schedule and continues to do so, with several teams still unable to get on the court.
Potts Camp, for example, will play two makeup games next week against Region 2-1A opponents Hickory Flat (Monday) and Blue Mountain (Tuesday).
Region tournaments are slated to start next week and must be completed by Saturday, Feb. 14, per the MHSAA.
Magruder named tennis male Player of the Year
Tupelo tennis player Land Magruder was awarded the Dorothy Vest Award, which is given to the top male and female player in the state. Magruder helped Tupelo capture a state title last year. The Golden Wave’s tennis season will begin next week.
