PEARL — Mize baseball coach Justin Ainsworth said he feels really confident when his junior pitcher Holder McAplin steps on the mound — and for good reason.

McAplin pitched a no-hitter in Game 1 of the MHSAA 2A championship series as Mize (30-8) secured a 3-0 win against East Webster (35-8) on May 21 at Trustmark Park.

"I finally got to that fifth inning, and I was like 'Dang, I got a no-hitter going,'" McAplin said. "After that, I didn't really have a thought in my head. 'I'm like, dang, there's the last batter.' And then there it was. It happened real quick."

The junior right-hand pitcher is 10-0 on the season with a 1.70 ERA and 108 strikeouts through 61⅓ innings pitched.

"He was really, really good tonight," Ainsworth said. "...
His fastball was good. His curveball was great today. It was a little bit loopy, but it really caught them off guard because he was up to (86-87 mph) with his fastball. Then coming in with a curveball around 67-68 miles per hour was pretty hard to hit."

McAplin mentioned his offspeed worked the best for him.

"My curveball was definitely the best," he said. "Curveball was good and sharp, and it was definitely my best pitch. I could throw it where I wanted, when I wanted."

Mize will face East Webster on May 22 in Game 2, aiming for its first championship since 2003. East Webster recently won in 2024 in 3A.

May 21 saw two no-hitters with McAplin and a combined no-hitter with William Goodson and Lanston Kent during Game 3 of Salitllo's 6A title against Pearl River Central. Saltillo won 5-0.
