New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller hasn't played more than eight games in a season throughout his three-year NFL career. As of the end of May, Miller remains in the middle of his recovery from a torn ACL as the team continues with voluntary organized team activities (OTAs).
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Thursday that Miller is doing well in his rehab, but made it clear that the young running back is still working his way back. Miller did not practice, and Moore indicated he’s unlikely to be seen much as OTAs continue.
For Miller, the focus right now is simply on getting healthy, staying healthy, and staying on track to return to the field. The former third-round pick out of TCU turns 24 in June and has dealt with several injury setbacks since entering the league. Miller tore his ACL in Week 7 of last season, dealt with hamstring injuries in 2024, and suffered an ankle injury in 2023 as a rookie.
Miller has certainly shown upside when available, showcasing a burst and physcality that made him an intriguing Day 2 draft pick. However, availability is the best ability, as some say, and that’s been the biggest obstacle for him early in his career.
The Saints added more competition to the backfield this offseason, which puts a greater emphasis on it. New Orleans sought out to land a lead back in free agency and did so by signing former Jacksonville Jaguar Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year deal.
For now, Miller is working his way back from injury, and his status is worth monitoring as the offseason continues. If he cannot get back quickly enough, there’s a world where the Saints at least have to consider a 53-man roster without their 2023 third-round pick.
