The New Orleans Saints went back to the Texas Longhorns early in Round 3, pairing their first-round pick Kelvin Banks Jr. with one of his teammates: Vernon Broughton. And those two know each other very well after competing against one another in blocking drills for the last few years. Broughton is a 6-foot-5, 311-pound defensive tackle who climbed the depth chart to rack up 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks while appearing in 56 games since 2020.

And he has another connection to the Saints. Broughton's former position coach Bo Davis was hired by New Orleans earlier this offseason. Davis coached Broughton from 2021 to 2023 in Austin and caught up with him again at the Texas pro day a few weeks back. Clearly that's a player he was comfortable working with again.

The glut of defensive line talent in Texas kept Broughton lower on the depth chart than he would have been on other teams, but it also slowed his development. He needs to clean up some things but he has the physical tools to help out in the interior rotation. The Saints already traded for Davon Godchaux but otherwise brought back last year's group, which ranked second-worst in rushing defense around the league.
