NFL postseason awards are beginning to get handed out. The major awards will be announced on Super Bowl weekend, such as Hall of Fame, offensive and defensive players of the year, Rookie of the Year, and MVP. Some others are announcing some of theirs early. On Tuesday, the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) announced their 2025 NFL All-Rookie squad.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough and left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. made the PFWA All-Rookie team. Despite a strong rookie seasons from safety Jonas Sanker and especially cornerback Quincy Riley, Shough and Banks were the only Saints to make the PFWA All-Rookie squad. New Orleans joined the New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons were the teams with two rookies voted to the team. Shough and Banks were the first Saints to land on the PFWA team since wide receiver Chris Olave received the honors in 2022.
Banks was the 9th overall choice in the draft after two All-American seasons with the Texas Longhorns. The third offensive lineman selected, Banks was an immediate starter at left tackle for the Saints. From there, he'd start all 17 contests and play 95% of the team's offensive snaps, more than any other player on the team. Banks was a dominant run blocker and outstanding in pass protection. Combined with 2024 first round pick Taliese Fuaga at right tackle, the Saints likely have a pair of edge blockers for the next several seasons.
Shough was a more controversial choice. The Saints used the eighth pick of the second round, the 40th overall selection, on Shough after a productive year with the Louisville Cardinals. He was the third quarterback selected, but was far more successful than any other rookie signal caller. Shough didn't get his first start until Week 9, but led the Saints to a 5-4 record down the stretch. He did so while leading a much more efficient attack, despite the rest of the offense being ravaged by injuries.
Tyler Shough completed 67.6% of his throws for 2,384 yards with 10 touchdown passes, 6 interceptions, and 3 rushing scores. Over the first eight games, the Saints averaged 13.9 points and 198.3 passing yards per game. In nine games with Shough as starter, New Orleans averaged 19.8 points and 251 passing yards per contest. He did so in spite of injuries that stripped the running back and wide receiver positions down to practice squad players and career backups.
Shough and Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan are considered the two favorites for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. That announcement will come on Super Bowl weekend. Banks and Shough, along with Quincy Riley and Jonas Sanker along with promising contributions from linebacker Danny Stutsman and running back Devin Neal, gave the Saints a strong 2025 draft class.
