NFL fans voted New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough as the recipient of the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year award on Thursday, which is a big deal. The news comes on the eve of Thursday night's NFL Honors awards ceremony where Shough is one of the favorites for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as selected by the Associated Press. He's in the mix along with Tetairoa McMillan, TreVeyon Henderson, Jaxon Dart, and Emeka Egbuka.
Shough, 26, played collegiately with Oregon and Texas Tech before finishing with the Louisville Cardinals. New Orleans drafted him with the 40th overall selection last spring, the eighth choice in the second round. He was the third quarterback drafted behind first overall choice Cam Ward and Dart, picked 25th overall. Shough was the second highest drafted quarterback in Saints franchise history. Archie Manning, picked second overall in 1971, is the only quarterback the Saints have ever drafted in the first round.
Shough didn't see significant playing time until taking over for a benched Spencer Rattler against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8. Getting his first start the following week, Shough engineered the Saints to a 5-4 record to finish the season. Over those nine outings, he'd complete over 69% of his throws for an average of 250 passing yards per game with 10 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and another 3 rushing scores.
Perhaps most impressive was the fact that Shough put up such good numbers without Alvin Kamara, Rashid Shaheed, and Devaughn Vele among several others. Playoff with mostly practice squad players at wide receiver and running back, Shough was one of the league's better quarterbacks down the stretch of the 2025 season.
