Ryan Reynolds has weighed in after hearing of a couple moving to Wales after watching 'Welcome To Wrexham' -Credit:James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images
Wrexham AFC has become a worldwide phenomenon since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney) purchased the ailing club for around $2.5 million back in 2021.
The two have documented the fairytale rise of their beloved club up the English soccer pyramid - enjoying back to back to back promotions between 2022 and 2025 - via the popular FX docuseries ‘Welcome To Wrexham.’
Along with the team’s on-field success and now-global fame, the town itself has also benefitted, with tourism netting the city just under £180 ($243.2 million) in 2024 - a £130 million ($175.6 million) jump from prior to the club’s takeover, as per North Wales Live.

Among those to have flocked to the Welsh city from abroad are Jeff and Janice Ivey, a couple from New Braunfels, Texas. Across seven trips to the home of the Red Dragons since watching ‘Welcome To Wrexham,’ the couple have become so enamored by the North Welsh city that they have decided to up sticks and move there.
Speaking to the BBC, Jeff explained, “We just felt so good about the community aspect of Wrexham,” going on to note how the citizens won them over with their “welcoming and friendly” nature, along with their “lack of elitism or snobbery.”
Responding to the article covering their move on social media, Reynolds jokingly commented, “Thank god they didn’t watch Chernobyl.”
All jokes aside, the Ivey’s will be moving to a city cheering on a club on the up, having narrowly missed out on a Premier League promotion playoff spot last season in what was their first season in the English second tier since 1982.
Led by manager Phil Parkinson, Wrexham have spent carefully this summer, signing full-back Danny Imray from Crystal Palace and Ben Whiteman from Preston North End - a far cry from the 13 senior players they brought in last summer. That being said, the transfer window isn’t set to close until September 1, meaning there is still plenty of time for the Red Dragons to welcome more new faces to aid in their promotion push.

In the meantime, their focus will be on rebounding from losing their first competitive game of the season - falling 1-0 to Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup - when they travel to Welsh rivals Cardiff City on August 17.
Speaking after the loss to Middlesbrough, Parkinson said of the upcoming Cardiff trip, “It's a brilliant first game of the season for us,” going on to add how he felt “in a way it's worked in our favor, I think it being on the Monday, because it gives us a chance to get that game in this week (a closed-doors friendly against Wigan Athletic), this Monday, which you know we always felt were part of our plans as soon as that fixture came out.
“So yeah, it's an important week for our buildup and the lads will come on for a lot from tonight and equally on Monday as well.”
