Ryan Fox became the third man this week to tie a major championship golf record with a 62 in the third round of the Open Championship on July 18 in Southport, England.
Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns both shot 62 during the second round of the tournament at Royal Birkdale, which also yielded a 62 to Branden Grace in 2017.
Fox recorded nine birdies and one bogey through 17 holes, but his tee shot on 18 found one of the bunkers on the right side of the fairway. But Fox was able to muscle a short iron shot out of the bunker, barely rivetted face, and but settling on the green for a birdie chance from about 60 feet away. His putt seemed on line but ran out of gas about 5 feet away.
He sank the next putt for his ninth par of the round to make history.
Four other players in major championship history have shot 62, all within the last 10 years.
Grace did so in the third round of the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Both Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele shot 62s in the first round of the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. Schauffele did it again in the first round of the 2024 PGA Championship in Valhalla, and Shane Lowry equaled the feat in the third round of the same tournament.
The 39-year-old New Zealander has two wins on the PGA Tour and four victories on the European Tour over his pro career, which began in 2012 on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Those two victories on the PGA Tour both game in playoffs in 2025 — the Myrtle Beach Open and the Canadian Open. He was ranked as high as No. 23 in the world in 2022. His best finish in the Open Championship was a tie for 16th in 2019. He did play in the other three majors this year, missing the cut at the Masters and finishing tied for 35th in the PGA Championship and tied for 23rd in the U.S. Open.
