Ryan Blaney was in a great position to win the 2026 In-Season Challenge, but it wasn't meant to be for the No. 12 team. On Sunday, Blaney lost the In-Season Challenge to Todd Gilliland, finishing in 26th place. If not for a wreck that gave the Team Penske driver splitter damage, he would have likely cruised to hte victory.
Gilliland was able to finish in 24th place, having a consistent one-car buffer between him and Blaney. It was the ultimate underdog victory. In 2025, Ty Dillon came up short of upsetting Ty Gibbs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This season was different as the No. 34 team took home the $1,000,000 prize.
Blaney was the heavy favorite, but he wasn't able to gain enough spots to put himself back in the lead for the championship. This is arguably one of the biggest accomplishments of Gilliland's career. For Blaney, he will now focus on putting himself in the best position for the Chase over the next month.
