After giving the media a chance to speak to head coach Greg Schiano, offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarocca, and defensive coordinator Travis Johansen, the program has started the press conferences where members of the media can ask questions to position coaches. This time, it was new defensive line coach Dennis Dottin Carter’s turn at the podium, having the chance to speak publicly in front of the media for the first time since joining the Knights coaching staff.
The first question at the press conference concerned his early impressions of the defensive line and how close he is to figuring out the position hierarchy. His first impression was of how hungry the players in his room are to win, and how they have been coming to work every day to give it their all with a workman’s and get-to attitude.
Later on in the press conference, Dottin-Carter was asked how he could get an EDGE Rusher to record five or more sacks, or rather, how he could get this group to break a trend of Rutgers struggling to rush the passer.
“I’m just going to change it by looking to get the best out of those guys, their best. Five-and-a-half sacks, I tell my guys that numbers don’t matter. When you look at the grand scheme of things, it’s not about the results; it’s about the process. You look at a guy by the name of Travon Walker, he wasn’t a big high-sack guy when it came down to it in his senior year, but he ended up going pretty high in the draft. It’s not about the results, whether in practice, whether on game day, it’s about the process. If we take the right process, which is coming to work with the right attitude, working like it’s the most important thing that’s in front of us, then the results will come. We’ll get there. Sacks come in bunches.”
The last question in the press conference had to do with his early impressions of Doug Blue-Eli, J’Dan Burnett, and Malachi Davis. He described how he loves how coachable they are and how they listen and try to apply what they are being taught on each rep. On top of that, he gave a special shout-out to Blue-Eli and how he has gotten great reports from everybody in the building, and how he has been continuing to work to get better every day. This likely is in regard to the injury he suffered last season.
