EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Despite a program first from star guard Camryn Runner, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team couldn’t outlast Belmont in overtime.
The Purple Aces had the Bruins’ back against the wall late in the fourth quarter with a five point lead following a three-pointer by Sydney Huber. But three costly turnovers and missed free throws helped Belmont send the game into overtime tied at 59.
In OT, UE got on the board first, but foul trouble put the game in the Bruins’ hands. Belmont shot a total of 16 free throws in the full five minutes of overtime outscoring the Purple Aces in the quarter by six. Evansville dropped the game 79-73.
“There’s no question that some losses hurt worse than others,” said head coach Robyn Scherr. “And you know if I had to choose between two types of losses, I’d take this one over getting beat by 20. So you know again I think we’re proving a lot to ourselves right now about who we can compete with. And so you know there was a ton of positives in this game to take from, and then there are things we’re going to learn from too and hopefully clean up. And hopefully that’ll help us down the road.”
Runner recorded the first triple-double in program history with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. While Georgia Cox continued her recent strong play, scoring a career high 23 points to go along with four assists. Huber knocked down three three-pointers to round out the group with 11 points. Worth noting star guard Logan Luebbers Palmer missed her third straight game.
Evansville will be back in action Sunday, February 1st, against Indiana State in Meeks Family Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. The game is set to stream on ESPN Plus.
