With the Philadelphia Phillies off to a rocky start in 2025, multiple facets of the game have underperformed. The most significant concern is with the bullpen, and especially the right-handed pitchers.
Fans have been clamoring for Dave Dombrowski to swing a deal for a top reliever, but a former general manager of the Phillies shuts down that potential.
On Sports Radio 94 WIP with Devan Kaney, former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. discussed the Phillies' bullpen issues and whether the Phillies should look to add an arm or not.
"I believe that Dave Dombrowski is out there scouring [for relievers], but I think you sort of have to let things play out a little bit longer," Amaro said
It's only been a month into the year, and seeing what Jordan Romano and Orion Kerkering can do with some more time can help dictate who the Phillies should target in the trade market.
Amaro was asked about Sacramento Athletics closer Mason Miller, and he shut down that notion by talking about the cost it would take to get someone of his caliber.
"You're going to have to give up a lot, and that's a tough pill to swallow if the other parts of your game aren't coming around," Amaro added.

Amaro mentions that the Athletics won't settle for just a couple of prospects from the Phillies; they will explore all their options and aim to get the best return.
"You're talking about giving up a lot for a guy like that," Amaro added. "I don't know if the A's are going to be going, 'Okay, let's just take, you know, two or three prospects.' They're going to take the best because this is a guy, he's got as good an arm as there is in baseball."
The competition for Miller would likely be fierce, and the Phillies would have to give up a lot for Miller or a similar reliever.
While there is a clear need in the bullpen for the Phillies, Amaro believes that the current arms in the bullpen need more time before trading for one of the better relievers in baseball.
"So, I think there's probably another month of assessment of what this team is, before you start making drastic moves like that."
Amaro's view of not trading for a star closer won't land well with most fans, as getting a star in the bullpen is very alluring. But Amaro doesn't completely shut it down, but instead preaches patience.
With Romano and Kerkering going through rough patches, if they can turn things around, the bullpen in Philadelphia would look a lot better than it does now.
