Rory McIlroy missed out on another major victory as he fell short of PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai at Aronimink.
Rai soared to nine-under on the final day in Pennsylvania, securing a three-shot win over Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley.
Meanwhile, McIlroy finished five shots back on four-under, ending his week in a tie for seventh with Xander Schauffele and Cam Smith.
The Northern Irishman has since summed up his display at the PGA Championship, with his efforts on three holes at Aronimink particularly disappointing him on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy says three holes cost him a chance of PGA Championship success
Summarizing his week at the major, McIlroy told BBC Sport NI: “Yeah look, proud that I give myself a chance today.
“You know, I dug myself out of a hole, which was great on Friday and Saturday. And then conditions were tough today.
“I felt like I played the golf I needed to, I just… there were three holes that I’ll rue. Not birdieing the two par fives, and then making bogey at the drivable par-4 13th.
“Those three holes are what cost me a chance to win the tournament today. It might not have mattered, Aaron obviously got to nine-under there, and you know, it’ll be great to see him win.
“There won’t be a more popular winner this year I would say. But yeah, those three holes I’ll look back on, and it could have been a different story if I had have played those a little bit better.”

Rory McIlroy concludes bittersweet week at the PGA Championship
Along with his bogey on the par-4 13th on Sunday, McIlroy could only make par at the par-5 9th and par-5 16th.
He finished his week with a one-under 69, having started out with a disappointing four-over 74 to start his tournament, followed by a 67 and a 66.
Further commenting on his time at Aronimink, he commented: “Yeah I figured a few things out after Thursday.
“And I played good golf for the last three rounds. I felt like I left a couple out there, probably Friday and Saturday, and today.
“So yeah I maybe didn’t get the most out of my rounds, but I played better and I gave myself a chance, and that’s all I could really ask for after the start.”
McIlroy finished with 13 birdies, 50 pars and nine bogeys across 72 holes, ranking him in T26, T9 and T4 respectively.
