Rory McIlroy has suggested what cost him the chance to seriously contend down the stretch on Sunday at the PGA Championship, as he also confirmed when he is set to play next.
McIlroy was one of a long list of players who went into the final round at Aronimink with a genuine chance of winning the second major of the year.
The Northern Irishman definitely flirted with stealing the show. However, he could not give himself enough opportunities to get across the line and secure a seventh major victory.
And when McIlroy made a bogey on the short par-four 13th, it was clear that the 37-year-old would not be lifting the Wanamaker Trophy for a third time in his career.
Rory McIlroy reacts to his PGA Championship performance
Remarkably, McIlroy made just one birdie on the par fives all week. And speaking to the media after his final round, he suggested that cost him.
He also spoke about the eventual champion, Aaron Rai.

“Yeah, I think not birdieing the two par fives and making the bogey at the drivable par-four 13th. To me I felt like I played the golf I needed to play the rest of the way. If I birdied the two par fives and turned that five into a three on 13, the day looks very different,” he said.
“Even though, look, Aaron is getting away from the field a little bit and looks like he’s going to win, which is great. You won’t find one person on property who’s not happy for him.
“But looking back on today’s round, I would say those three holes.”
McIlroy confirms when he will be playing next on the PGA Tour
McIlroy only played once on the PGA Tour between The Masters and the PGA Championship. That appearance came at the Truist Championship, where he has had plenty of success over the years.
McIlroy seems to have found a formula that works for him in major season where he does not play a great deal in tournaments.
So perhaps it is not a surprise that McIlroy has now confirmed that he will not be playing in either of the next two PGA Tour events.
“Yeah, I’m going to take a couple weeks off, and then Memorial will be my next one,” he said.
McIlroy made headlines after deciding to skip The Memorial last year. Jack Nicklaus noted that he had not spoken to McIlroy about his decision ahead of the event at Muirfield Village.
It is good to see that he intends to return this time around. It should certainly help him get ready for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills next month.
