The New Orleans Saints are in the quarterback business, so you shouldn't rule out Tyler Shough at some point in the NFL draft. Shough could be a Day 2 or Day 3 pick, and the Saints would be grabbing a quarterback reminiscent of Derek Carr in the mind of The Athletic's Ted Nguyen. For strictly mentorship purposes, it would provide a smooth transition.

Carr's tenure with the Saints has been rocky to say the least, but he was a second round pick and starting quarterback in the league for a decade. Nguyen's comparison between Shough and Carr consists of the good and bad. Nguyen sees athleticism and arm talent, but he also sees clumsiness and a tendency to panic under pressure.

The latter trait may be the most frustrating aspect of watching Derek Carr. Panicking under pressure leads to reacting to pressure before it gets there, rushed mental processing and turnovers. It's genuinely a killer offensively. A common lack of poise is not a trait that's easy to overlook in a quarterback, especially when you're actively searching for them to be the opposite.

The combination of athletic-but-clumsy is a tough one to grapple with. In a sense, they negate themselves, but you really just need for him to increase the former, while decreasing the latter. The pocket can get jumbled at times, and avoiding clumsiness goes hand in hand with remaining poised under pressure. If Tyler Shough is a third round pick who becomes a 12-year starter like Derek Carr, that's a win. The Saints probably just aren't accepting that.
