Roger Clemens Doubles Down On Claim As Top-10 Boston Athlete originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Boston Red Sox legend Roger Clemens found himself in the news last week after his X account replied to a post that created a top-10 all-time Boston athlete ranking and omitted the hard ball thrower.
Clemens was in Worcester Friday night to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate’s home opener. The Red Sox great quickly walked back the X post, pinning the blame on his son, who Clemens said is in charge of his social media.
“First of all, I don’t do all that my son does all that for me,” Clemens said as quoted by Michael Raimondi of Boston 25 News. “He calls and tells me, 'Dad, this is what’s going on,' so he put that in there. I thought it was perfect.”
However, just because he did not make the post, it does not mean that he does not agree with what was posted. In fact, when Raimondi asked the former Red Sox whether he believes he deserves a spot on the all-time list, Clemens’ response was even more emphatic than the first.
“100 percent. I mean, that’s not even a question,” Clemens replied.
He went on to say that he hadn’t seen the actual list, and wouldn’t pay much mind to it if he had. However, he left the reporter with a humble brag regarding his 4,672 strikeout career.
“When you are mentioned with guys like Cy Young or Babe Ruth or Willie Mays, guys like that. You’re in pretty good company. That’s good enough for me,” Clemson said.
I asked Clemens about this tweet just now.
