For Colorado Rockies rookie pitcher Sean Sullivan on Friday night, he proved to be impressive against the Athletics at Las Vegas Ballpark. Sullivan worked the first three innings before leaving the game due to illness issues.

After the Rockies lost to the Athletics 6-4, Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer revealed that Sullivan, who was just called up from Triple-A Albuquerque, was throwing up in the dugout.

“He’s fine now, but he was sick as a dog, throwing up in the bullpen before the game,” Schaeffer said, according to MLB.com. “He grinded for us today in his big-league debut. I don’t know how much of that he’s going to remember, coming in between innings and throwing up."

Schaeffer Pleased with Sullivan

Schaeffer also added that he was pleased with Sullivan for giving him three innings despite feeling bad. Sullivan even managed to get out Athletics sluggers Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz, too.

Langeliers and Kurtz, though, took out their frustrations later by hitting back-to-back solo home runs.

In his three innings of work, Sullivan threw 49 pitches at Las Vegas Ballpark. Sullivan totaled 33 strikes in that timespan.

“I obviously wanted to stay out there a little bit longer, but I tried to give them everything I had,” Sullivan said after the game. “This was a huge milestone for me, one of my lifetime goals, so I’m happy I was able to accomplish it.”

Rookie Pitcher Looked Good

Sullivan flashed his entire pitching arsenal against the Athletics, too. Yet he really leaned on his four-seam fastball, using it for 29 pitches among his 49 pitches to catcher Hunter Goodman.

He stayed in the strike zone all night long. That's a very impressive thing for such a young pitcher to do. Make hitters hit strikes, if they can catch up to a pitcher's pitches.

If Sullivan can build on this outing and come back even stronger, then what's not to keep him out of the Rockies' starting rotation? Honestly, only himself if he starts throwing a lot of wild, out-of-the-zone pitches.

The Rockies and Athletics play on Saturday night. Then, these two teams wrap up the series at Las Vegas Ballpark in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon.
