This Friday, recent draft pick Bruce Thornton will make his Houston Rockets debut at the NBA’s 2026 summer league in Las Vegas.

And he’ll definitely have a number of supportive observers watching from his college basketball program at Ohio State.

Thornton, 22, was a relative rarity in today’s transfer-happy collegiate landscape. The 6-foot-0 guard played four consecutive seasons with the Buckeyes, and he showed consistent availability and improvement over that time.

From 2022-23 through 2025-26, Thornton played in 136 of Ohio State’s 137 games at an average of almost 35 minutes per game. He increased his scoring average each year, capped by a 19.9 points per game clip as a senior, and he somehow became much more efficient despite taking on increased volume.

As a senior, Thornton shot a blistering 55.4% from the field, 40.0% on 3-pointers, and 82.9% from the free-throw line, and he averaged 3.9 assists while committing only 1.3 turnovers.

Best of all, Thornton got his Buckeyes (21-13, 12-8 in Big Ten play) back into the NCAA Tournament after three consecutive seasons in which Ohio State missed out on March Madness and finished with a losing conference record.

That made quite an impression on Jake Diebler, the head coach at Ohio State over the past two years. Thornton chose to stick it out with the program amid the coaching change, and he ultimately reaped the rewards by blossoming into a team leader and a viable NBA prospect.

Vanessa Richardson, courtside reporter for Space City Home Network’s Rockets coverage, caught up with Diebler for an upcoming episode of Rockets All Access.

In a clip posted to social media, Diebler said of Thornton’s game:

His foundation is doing whatever the team needs to win. He cares so much about winning. For us, we needed him to score at a high level, and be efficient while he did that.

But also turn around, and in most games, guard the other team’s best perimeter player. And he did that for us playing 36 minutes per game, roughly. So, he’s got an ability to guard the ball and off the ball. He has an ability to create for himself and create for others.

But ultimately, he’s consumed with doing whatever it takes to win. I think that’s why you saw him get better and better, every year he was here. I think that quality will translate to your level. Whatever coach asks him to do, he’s going to do the absolute best he can for him.

Guys are going to love him in the locker room because he plays so hard, and he’s always competing with everything he’s got.

The complete interview can be watched in a new July episode of Rockets All Access (SCHN schedule).
