The Houston Rockets did well to move up in the second round of Wednesday's 2026 NBA Draft, grabbing point guard depth in the form of Bruce Thornton with the No. 31 overall pick.
Thornton played four seasons at Ohio State, becoming their all-time leading scorer after averaging 19.9 points per game in his senior season. In addition to near 20 points per game, Thornton averaged 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 55.4% from the field and 40% from 3-point range. Considering his size (6'2"), his shooting efficiency is particularly impressive.
Following his selection, Thornton expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, "I'm just so grateful. To hug my mom, to say we made it; we finally did it. All the sacrifices, but definitely worth it."
When asked about his potential impact, Thornton said, "I'm just trying to be a winner at the end of the day. I'm just trying to win games and impact winning the most as I possibly can each and every night. I know it's going to be tough, but I'm built for the moment."
Looking ahead to his rookie season, Thornton may see a chance to earn minutes, currently behind both Reed Sheppard and Fred VanVleet on the team's depth chart.
