The Robstown boys powerlifting team captured its first state championship in program history to highlight a strong showing from Coastal Bend athletes at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
The San Diego boys also placed second in Division II and Agua Dulce finished third in Division IV.
The Pickers won the team title behind Gilbert Rios, who won gold in the 181-pound weight class with a total of 1,685 pounds lifted. Ricardo Ruiz added a silver medal at 148 pounds and Gabe Garza placed third in the 165-pound weight class.
Tuloso-Midway’s Zachary Garza earned a state medal after placing third in the 148-pound weight class with a 1,490-pound total.

San Diego’s second-place finish was powered by Devon Hernandez winning the 114-pound weight class with a 1,065 pounds and teammate Jared Rodriguez claiming bronze at 198 pounds with 1,695 pounds. Ethan Perez added a third-place finish in the 123-pound class.
Santa Gertrudis Academy’s Alejandro Garcia placed third in the 114-pound weight class with a 990-pound total and Banquete’s Tyler Fox placed second in the 308-pound weight class with a 1,870-pound total.
Agua Dulce’s Jadrian Torres captured a state title in the 123-pound weight class with a total of 1,230 pounds and teammate Aiden Martinez earned bronze at 165 pounds to lead the Longhorns.
Mathis’ Aaron Acosta earned a state title in the 165-pound class and teammate Clyde Veliz added a fourth-place finish in the 275 class.
London’s Easton Nguyen earned a bronze medal at 165 pounds with Bishop’s Mark Diaz securing a bronze medal in the 148 and Odem’s Phillip Flores earned a silver medal in the same weight class.
Taft’s Sergio Leal claimed a state title in the 132-pound division with a 1,420 pounds and Hebbronville’s Jaydiv Darley finished second in the 114 class.
