Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker made his light heavyweight debut on Saturday against battle-tested veteran Nikita Krylov. The two headlined the UFC 329 preliminary fight card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
After suffering back-to-back losses in the 185-pound division, Whittaker opted to change weight classes and try his hand as a light heavyweight. Krylov wanted to show "The Reaper" that he made a bad decision.
Krylov pressed forward and looked much bigger than Whittaker. Whittaker bounced on the outside and landed a right hand followed by a left. Krylov clinched but they quickly separated. Krylov closed the distance and worked to get the fight to the ground. Whittaker eventually was takedown down but worked his way to his feet. They separated. Whittaker stepped in with a left hand. Whittaker connected with a right hand. Krylov responded with a kick to the body. Whittaker round a home with his right hand. His jab snapped Krylov's head back. Whittaker's speed gave Krylov issues. Krylov clinched but Whittaker circled free. Whittaker partially landed a head kick at the bell. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Whittaker.
Krylov came out in the second frame throwing leg kicks. Whittaker bounced on the outside. He stepped in with a stiff jab. Krylov responded with a kick to the body. Whittaker connected with a combination. Krylov pressed forward but a was met with punches. Whittaker unloaded a combination. His right hand began landing more often. Whittaker delivered another combination. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Whittaker.
Whittaker connected with his jab early in the third. Whittaker hurt Krylov with a right hand. He followed up with a clean right hand that forced Krylov to quit. Whittaker may have broken Krylov's jaw. The official time of the stoppage was 1:01 of the third round.
