Florida State basketball faced the University of California, Berkeley (Cal) Golden Bears on Wednesday, March 11, in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament. The Seminoles began the tournament with their second win over Cal this season, a 95-89 victory. The win comes as FSU searches for its second ACC Championship in program history.

For the first time in 24 years, the ’Noles appeared in the ACC Tournament without former head coach Leonard Hamilton at the helm. In head coach Luke Loucks’ first season, the Garnet and Gold continue to impress down the stretch, as they have now won 11 out of their last 14 ACC games. In Loucks’ first ACC Tournament game as head coach, Florida State’s 95 points marked the most scored in an ACC Tournament game in program history.

“I told [the team] right before the game, ‘if you’re going to be selfish about one thing, you should be selfish about winning games,’” Loucks said in the postgame press conference. “I want to be greedy, I don’t want this season to end. I just want to keep winning games, and if we play the way we’ve been playing, I think that’s a really good possibility.”

FSU uses hot shooting and zone defense to build first-half lead

The Seminoles showed signs of tournament jitters in the early going. FSU started 0-5 from the 3-point arc until senior guard Robert McCray V hit the first three of the game 5:10 into the first half. Cal jumped out to an early 13-7 lead, but the ’Noles countered with a 15-2 run to take a 22-15 lead. With McCray working the offense, senior guard Kobe Magee hit three 3-pointers during the run to lead the Garnet and Gold.
